History

PG plc (Company/PG Group) is a reputable investment company with interests in a number of successful ventures in the Maltese Islands. Over the years, the company grew its operation and invested in a number of sustainable and attractive opportunities. Its sole purpose is directed towards the local economy and employs no less than 350 people. The business activities are diverse and include real estate, supermarket and fashion.

The Company’s ethos is reflected in the services given to its clients.  The client remains the centre of the Group’s activities which strives to offer the best service, at the right price and from the best location.

The Group is involved in the following business activities:

  1. PAVI (Qormi) and PAMA (Mosta) Supermarkets;
  2. PAMA Shopping Mall in Mosta;
  3. The franchise of ZARA and ZARA Home in Sliema and Mosta.

The Board of the PG Group believes, that being a good corporate citizen means that it has to contribute part of its profitability back to the Maltese society. The Board operates a Corporate Social Responsibility Program that addresses different segments such as the environment, the Maltese cultural heritage and the socially deprived people.

Corporate History

Although the Group was set up in November 2016, its subsidiaries date back to February 1987. At the time, the Company’s sole director. Mr. Paul Gauci, experienced and well-respected businessman in Malta, started this retail business. He understood the opportunities prevailing at the time, and focused on the retail sector and continued to diversify his operations. In all his business ventures, Mr. Gauci always adopted the same principles, that of offering his clients the products they want, at the right price and from the best localities. He never compromised on quality of service and this led to the success of his Group.

Company Milestones

2002 Opening of ZARA Fashion

Alhambra Complex in Sliema has exclusively traded in the garments sector focusing on male, female and children’s fashion from the world known ZARA brand.

2006 Opening of PAVI Shopping Complex

One of the largest supermarkets on the island was opened in a very strategic location at the junction of two main arterial roads, the Qormi By-pass and the Mriehel By-pass.

2008 Opening of ZARA Home

Following the success of ZARA clothing, Alhambra Group also opened ZARA Home which offers high quality products at reasonable prices. The outlet is set in modern surroundings and guarantees a great variety of luxurious home ware.

2015 Opening of PAMA Supermarket

Opening of the largest supermarket in Malta, and the beginning of PAMA Shopping Village.

2016 Opening of PAMA Shopping Mall

Complete finalisation of PAMA Shopping Village in Mosta.

2016 Opening of ZARA Home Mosta

Due to the success of ZARA Home in Sliema, a new branch of ZARA Home was opened at PAMA Shopping Mall.

JOHN ZARB FCCA, FIA, CPA
Chairman

Mr. Zarb is a fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, and of the Malta Institute of Accountants and holds a warrant of Certified Public Accountant. He recently retired from a long career with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he served as a partner between 1988 until his retirement on 31st December 2014 upon reaching the firm’s mandatory partner retirement age.

Mr. Zarb is a fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, and of the Malta Institute of Accountants and holds a warrant of Certified Public Accountant. John is a former Council member and past president of Malta Institute of Accountants. He served on the Accountancy Board, the regulatory body of the profession, between 1996 and 2014, and represented Government on the EU Accounting Regulatory Committee between 2004 until his retirement in 2014. John also served for many years as a visiting lecturer and examiner in Auditing at University of Malta.

Mr. Gauci is the main shareholder of the Company. He is the founder of the PG Group and remains one of the driving forces behind the business. He is an experienced businessman, actively involved in the business development of a number of companies, particularly in the retail and real estate sectors, over the last 50 years.

CLAIRE BORG GAUCI
Non-Executive Director

Ms. Borg Gauci, the daughter of Paul Gauci is a shareholder of a number of companies forming part of the Group. She is responsible for Customer and Shareholder relationships. She also heads the Company’s Marketing and Public Relations Department.

Claire-Alexia joined the Group in April 2008 when she worked at the Zara and Zara Home store in Sliema and assumed her current responsibilities in September 2015.

He retired from Bank of Valletta plc in December 2015 following a 34 years career during which he occupied various senior management positions,

Mr. Borg is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (UK), and holds a banking degree and a Masters degree in financial legislation from the University of Malta. He retired from Bank of Valletta plc in December 2015 following a 34 years career during which he occupied various senior management positions,

including that of Chief Executive Officer during 2012 to 2015. He has occupied directorship positions of listed companies in Malta and was appointed Chairman of the Housing Authority during the period 2009 to 2011. He also Chaired the audit Boards of the European Investment Fund, which is a subsidiary of the European Investment Bank, and of Mapfre Middlesea Insurance. Charles also served as a director on the World’s Savings Bank in Brussels and was also the President of the Institute of Financial Services and the President of the Malta Bankers Association.

Mr. Borg is the Head of the Purchasing Department covering the two supermarkets operated by the Group. Gianluca started working with the Group in July 2015 and has previously owned a retail outlet within the PAMA Shopping Village.

focusing on strategic issues related to a business development, leadership, human resources development, management and marketing. He is a former chairman of the Employment and Training Corporation, Malta International Airport plc, Air Malta plc and Malta Enterprise.

Mr. Spiteri Bailey, a Certified Public Accountant and a registered auditor, is a partner within RSM Malta, responsible for risk management services. William has extensive experience in servicing and advising clients across a wide range of industry sectors.

Mr. Spiteri Bailey, a Certified Public Accountant and a registered auditor, is a partner within RSM Malta, responsible for risk management services. William has extensive experience in servicing and advising clients across a wide range of industry sectors.

William is an ex-President of the Malta Institute of Accountants and currently a Council Member. He is also the current Chair of the Services Economic Group and of the Financial Services Business Section of The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry.

William is also currently a member of the IFAC (International Federation of Accountants – New York) Small and Medium Practices (SMP) Committee.

Maria Micallef was the Managing Partner at RSM Malta until her retirement in December 2020. Maria specialised in business advisory services including mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, valuations and investment appraisals. She is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta. Currently Maria is pursuing studies and following a Degree in Humanities at the same University.

Maria served as President of the Malta Institute of Accountants during the period 2013 to 2015.

Mr Malcolm Camilleri is a Certified Public Accountant and a fellow Member of both the Institute of Accountants and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He also sits on the Board of Directors of various PG plc owned companies.

Mr. Camilleri joined PG Group in 2006 as Chief Financial Officer following a 3-year experience at an audit firm. His expertise includes business development, auditing, strategic planning, financial accounting and business analysis.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer

Mr Malcolm Camilleri is a Certified Public Accountant and a fellow Member of both the Institute of Accountants and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He also sits on the Board of Directors of various PG plc owned companies.

Mr. Camilleri joined PG Group in 2006 as Chief Financial Officer following a 3-year experience at an audit firm. His expertise includes business development, auditing, strategic planning, financial accounting and business analysis.

He is also a resourceful individual and the company’s driving force in generating new ideas and devising feasible solutions to more efficient operational processes while maintaining a positive and proactive attitude.

Malcolm is also currently the chairman of the Retail Business Section in The Malta Chamber of Commerce and a member of the PAIB committee in the Malta Institute of Accountants.

Chief Financial Officer

Prior to joining PG p.l.c., Mr. Micallef worked for a number of years as a senior corporate accountant in Sydney, Australia, where he managed the corporate function of a multinational company. He began his career with PwC’s audit department, where he audited various public listed entities in Malta, the UK and Italy.

Mr. Micallef is a Certified Public Accountant and a Member of the Malta Institute of Accountants.

Silvio Carabott has extensive experience in the retail and fashion retail business spending more than 11 years with two leading wine and spirits importers and over five years managing one of the leading fashion retail brands. He was also the Managing Director of a company responsible to set up and manage a number of catering  establishments.  Mr Carabott, who is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, is today the Chief Operating Officer of the PG Group. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from Anglia Ruskin University and a Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership from London School of Marketing.
